This morning I was surprised to hear loud birdy noises coming downhill
toward my house. Continued observation showed two young Pileateds acting
like juveniles everywhere. They hopped around the drive pecking at the
gravel and flew here and there experimentally knocking on trees and
sapplings, then moved off. Meanwhile, their parents were intermittantly
kiki-ing in the woods as they proudly escorted their young. What a way to
begin the day on the side of Hogsback Mountain just outside of Bristol.
