Tree Swallows: Yesterday we decided to check all five
of our boxes after all the discussion about bad
weather & dead birds. Three boxes have live babies,
being fed by parents. One box smelled really bad, and
when we opened it there were a lot of big feathers on
top of a nest of obviously just hatched, but long
dead, babies. The last box didn't smell too good, but
a female Bluebird dove out as we started to check it.
She has built her nest on top of the Tree Swallow
nest, which apparently has dead babies too. We saw
there were eggs already laid, so beat a hasty retreat!
Male & female watched us from nearby fenceposts, then
went back in the box before we got a more than a few
yards away.
