This morning I made a trip to Wenlock WMA in Fernand with the mission
of seeing 4 boreal species: Spruce Grouse, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee
and Lincoln's Sparrow. I suceeded in getting 3 out of the 4; the
grouse was not despite a major effort. The jays were in the thick
woods among the numerous blow downs east of the WMA road and parking
area (just north of the Moose Bog trailhead). The chickadee was about
a third of the way down Moose Bog Trail heading west; and the sparrows
were at Moose Bog as usual. Another less used trail south of the
wetland by the Moose Bog trailhead was walked until it petered out.
Most of the trail goes through spruce forest with a heavier component
of northern hardwards tha occurs along Moose Bog Trail. It ends in
northern hardwood forest and a patch cut that is several years old.
Birds listed below preceeded by an * were seen in these hardwoods.
