Dear VTBIRDers,
Two Red-necked Grebes (in breeding plumage) were among the highlights at
Berlin Pond this morning. While watching them (along with a newly
arrived Common Loon), we noticed two otters frolicking (and possibly
copulating) in the pond.
Finally, a plea to anyone who turns binoculars toward insects: Mike
Blust, Kevin Hemeon, and I have been searching for an exceedingly rare
dragonfly called Ringed Boghaunter (Williamsonia lintneri). Despite our
efforts in all the likely places (mostly fens), we have yet to find it.
I'm now convinced that if this insect is to be discovered in Vermont, it
will be by accident. I can envision some birder or someone out walking
the dog finding what would be among Vermont's rarest animals. This tiny
dragonfly generally flies in or near peatlands from late April to mid
May. If you're interested in learning more, you can find and download a
one-page, color wanted poster at:

Best,
Bryan Pfeiffer
