Five Satyrodes -- Appalachian Brown types -- (net and visual)
in a drying woodland marsh, South Hero Block-2 on September 7th,
September 7th-AND-8th, at least eight individuals present,
apparently flying only after mid-day.
List for 7-September-2006:
5 Appalachian Brown
0 Eyed Brown (none in marsh habitats 1/2 mile from Appy Browns)
8 Least Skipper
~10 Monarch (& 100’s on Lake Champlain - largest flight of Aug/Sep)
~20 Common Ringlet
3 Viceroy
1 Red Admirable
~20 Crescent Sp.
2 Great Spangled Fritillary
1 Azure Species.
2 Eastern Tailed-Blue
~10. Orange Sulphur
~20. Clouded Sulphur
~5 Cabbage/Broccoli White
~50 woolybear caterpillars dining on water parsnip.
Baltimore Checkerspot larvae: The last nest of 4th-instar
larvae (out of 1000s) were all tucked in for the winter
in their 2000-square-foot bed of white turtlehead.
I took a couple of the late 3rd -instar larvae home to photograph
on Aug 26th; forgot about them for a week; and opened the tin
to find that the one still very lively larvae had cannibalized the other.
