It's rare to find a fungicide that actually works, especially
organic materials. So I'm glad to report one clear success: We've had
pretty bad powdery mildew in our tomato greenhouses for the past several
years and have tried lots of stuff with limited success. This year we
got it pretty early and most plants had at least some infection. We
began a program of spraying Milstop every single week (Thursday) and
were able to bring it under control and now seem to have it almost
completely stopped! True, we have been leaf pruning and lowering the
plants as the season progressed, but in the past we did the same and
still ended up at this time of year with a mess.. just hanging on. The
difference, I believe, is sticking to a strict schedule. I'm sure the
proper thing to have done is alternate materials, but what the hell, it
worked! I'm not sure that a constant exposure to Potassium Bicarb is
that great for the plants, but they look OK and we're picking plenty of
fruit for this time of year. The rate has been one tablespoon per gallon
of spray. We really soak the plants; using about 15 gal per 30x95 house
with five double rows of plants. Approx. 400 plants. Now that it's under
control, we could probably cut way back on the rate, but I'm reluctant
to change something that works.
I'd be interested in other folks' experiences. .... Jake Guest,
