The Health Sciences Library System of the University of Pittsburgh
invites applications for the new position of Consumer Health Librarian
at UPMC Shadyside. The primary responsibility of this position is to
provide direct consumer health reference services to patients of UPMC
Shadyside and their families utilizing a variety of print, electronic,
media, and database resources. The Consumer Health Librarian is
responsible for collection development, promotion, and policy
development for the Hopwood Health Resource Center (to open in August
2000), and also assists with the provision of information to clinicians,
researchers and other health professionals at UPMC Shadyside. This
position is a faculty librarian appointed through the Health Sciences
Library System of the University of Pittsburgh, and reporting to the
Manager of Library Services at UPMC Shadyside.
The principal duties and responsibilities of the Consumer Health
Librarian are as follows:
1. Assist library users with reference questions, answer in-person,
telephone, and electronically transmitted inquiries using print,
electronic and media resources. Perform mediated searches;
2. Develop and maintain the collection of consumer health materials in a
variety of formats; evaluate and select suitable materials;
3. Participate in the design, maintenance, and development of the HSLS
consumer health information web site on the world wide web;
4. Participate in the development and implementation of policies and
procedures for provision of consumer health information;
5. Promote consumer health information services through training,
publicity, presentations and specialized classes about the library’s
services;
6. Coordinate work assignments and scheduling of students or volunteers
in the library;
7. In the absence of the Library Manager, oversee the medical library,
answer reference questions as needed, and supervise the library staff;
8. Participate in professional development;
9. Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications for the position are:
1. Required: Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited
school, with specialized studies in health sciences and/or medical
informatics.
2. Required: Experience working in a health sciences library and
providing reference service and mediated searches. Preferred:
Experience with consumer health information services
3. Required: Knowledge of computer applications, including medical or
consumer databases, Internet searching, web design, and HTML experience.
4. Required: Demonstrated ability to interact with the public in a
patient and tactful manner. Experience developing and teaching classes
and workshops to adult learners. Flexibility, ability to manage
multiple tasks, and to work collaboratively and independently in a
complex and fast-paced clinical environment. Excellent interpersonal
skills, as well as demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.

Salary is commensurate with experience, minimum $33,000. Position is a
full-time, non-tenured, faculty librarian position at the University of
