CIT recommends Windows 2000, warns against Windows ME
UVM's Computing & Information Technology (CIT) announces our full
support for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server.
After working with Windows 2000 for several months, CIT staff are
confident that this product provides a stable Windows environment that
will work well in our campus computing environments. Windows 2000 is the
continuation of the Windows NT product line, and its core technologies
will be carried forward into the "Whistler" product.
Window ME (Millennium Edition), on the other hand, is NOT supported by
Windows ME has been designed for the consumer market, and introduces a
number of incompatibilities that make it unsuitable for use in UVM's
complex enterprise environment. Windows ME is the final product to be
based upon the Windows 9x technologies and represents a technology
Computers purchased through UVM's Microcomputer Services continue to be
available with Windows 98 SE, which CIT recommends. For a fee, system
may be upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional, which CIT also recommends
