Letter re Transportation
To Bill Riegel, copy to Michael Taub
As a result of our review of WWSU statutes with Bill Reedy, chief legal
counsel for the Department of Education, we find that we were mistaken
in our interpretation of VSA § 301. We had inferred that the consent of
all districts was required in order to depart from proportional pupil
enrollment in the distribution of any WWSU costs. In fact, according to
Bill Reedy, VSA § 263 and 264 represent the governing authority in these
matters, which provide that such decisions will be by majority vote of
the WWSU board and be binding upon all school districts.
On this basis we acknowledge that our protest in respect to the cost
distribution specified in the transportation contract is unfounded, and
have made the board decision to accept and sign the contract. We
apologize for the inconveniences caused by this misunderstanding.
However, we do feel that the basic issue needs further WWSU board
discussion and would hope that it will find a place on the agenda at
some future meeting.
Sincerely, etc.
Candidates for Community Boards
Each year three positions on the 5-member Select Board and the
5-member school board are filled by election at the March Town Meeting.
In both cases 2 of the 3 positions are for one year terms, and 1 is for
a three year term. In the case of the school board, it is likely that
at least one of the incumbents, and possibly two, will not be seeking
reelection.
Candidates for these offices must be eligible voters in Moretown
and need to submit to the Town Clerk, by January 29th, 2001, a
nominating petition signed by 14 eligible Moretown voters. Such
petitions are available from the Town Clerks office.
The Moretown School Board suggest that those potentially interested
in becoming candidates for the school board attend its January 9th
meeting (5:30 pm in the Moretown school library) for an information and
question and answer session.
