In the distant past, during a Ms thesis study of the Excello black
shale, I removed the organic to allow analysis of the clays by oxidation and
making them soluble by soaking ground shale in hot sodium hypochlorite
solution (Chlorox). It did leave clean clays. Might the metals from the
organics be quantitatively carried in the solution? Would the metals in the
clays be also removed? That was not a topic I investigated. It is quite a
challenge to separate effects of organics and clays
in the black shale chemistry.
