AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
301 AM EST SAT MAR 10 2001

WILL ALLOW ANY REMAINING WARNINGS/ADVISORIES TO EXPIRE WITH THE NEW
FORECAST THIS MORNING. COORDINATED THIS WITH ALBANY AND GRAY...WHICH
ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THIS IDEA. AS MAIN SURFACE LOW OVER THE
GULF OF MAINE CONTINUES TO MOVE TO THE NORTHEAST TODAY...THE IMPACT
FROM THIS SYSTEM WILL BECOME LESS AND LESS AS THE DAY WEARS ON.
ALREADY SEEING THIS NOW WITH WARMING CLOUD TOPS ON SATELLITE IMAGERY
OVER NORTHERN NEW YORK. ALSO VAD WIND PROFILE ON KCXX RADAR SHOWING
WINDS ALOFT CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE NORTHERLY WITH TIME AS OPPOSED TO
THE EASTERLY FLOW EARLIER. THIS SUGGESTS WESTWARD PUSH OF MOISTURE
LAST NIGHT HAS STOPPED PROGRESSING AND SHOULD EVENTUALLY BEGIN MOVING
BACK EASTWARD. ALREADY SEEING RADAR TRENDS OF DECREASING AREAL
COVERAGE ACROSS THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY WITH STEADIER LIGHT SNOWS OVER
EASTERN AND SOUTHERN VERMONT. WILL GO WITH SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS
THIS MORNING ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK AND THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY AND
LIGHT SNOW LIKELY ELSEWHERE. ANY ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE
LESS THAN AN INCH OVER SOUTHERN AND EASTERN VERMONT. NORTHWEST
GRADIENT WILL INCREASE A BIT TODAY WITH THE LOW DEEPENING TO OUR
EAST. LOW LEVEL THICKNESS TRENDS SUGGEST HIGH TEMPERATURES SHOULD
BE ONLY A COUPLE OF DEGREES COOLER THAN YESTERDAY...WHICH KEEPS
MOST AREAS IN THE LOWER TO MID 30S.

SOME CLEARING SHOULD TAKE PLACE INITIALLY TONIGHT...BEFORE CLOUDS
ADVANCE BACK INTO THE REGION AFTER MIDNIGHT. THIS WILL BE IN
RESPONSE TO FAST MOVING UPPER TROUGH APPROACHING THE FORECAST AREA
FROM THE WEST. LIGHT SNOW WILL BE LIKELY BY DAYBREAK ACROSS
NORTHERN NEW YORK AND THEN SPREAD EAST ACROSS VERMONT AS THE
MORNING WEARS ON. DYNAMIC SUPPORT LOOKS SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO
SUPPORT GOING FORECAST OF LIKELY POPS...SO NO CHANGES NEEDED HERE.
BASED ON THE FAST MOVEMENT OF THIS SYSTEM...LIKE THE IDEA IN THE
GOING FORECAST OF ANY LINGERING LIGHT SNOWS TO END DURING THE
EVENING HOURS SUNDAY NIGHT. GOING FORECAST HAS THIS COVERED WELL
WITH EVENTUAL CLEARING AFTER MIDNIGHT AS HIGH PRESSURE SETTLES INTO
THE REGION.

IN THE EXTENDED...DRIER AIR MOVES INTO THE REGION ON MONDAY WITH
VERTICAL PROFILES SHOWING LIMITED MOISTURE. THUS WILL MAINTAIN
IDEA OF MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES ON MONDAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE
APPROACHING THE 40 MARK AS A RESULT OF THE ABUNDANT SUNSHINE. FLOW
ALOFT BECOMES SOUTHWEST WITH TIME MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY WHICH
WILL SET THE STAGE FOR AN INFLUX OF WARMER AIR. THIS SHOULD BRING
ABOUT PLENTY OF CLOUDS AS THE WARM AIR MOVES ACROSS THE LARGE
SNOWPACK. SHOULD SEE PLENTY OF LOW CLOUDS/FOG LATE MONDAY NIGHT...
TUESDAY...AND WEDNESDAY AS MILDER TEMPERATURES PERSIST DURING THIS
PERIOD. ALSO GOING FORECAST OF A CHANCE OF RAIN LOOKS REAL GOOD
FOR TUESDAY. NO CHANGES EXPECTED BEYOND THE WEDNESDAY TIME PERIOD IN
THE EXTENDED.

                        LSC WEATHER CENTER FORECAST
                           11:00PM, Friday March
                   STUDENT METEOROLOGIST: Nicholas Savoie
** The latest forecast for Northeast & North Central Vermont**
** The area bounded by Waterbury, St. Johnsbury, and Newport**

                      WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY TONIGHT

Tonight: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather
Advisory for tonight. We can expect snow on and off tonight.
Accumulations will be 2 to 7 inches of snow. This snow will be a heavy
wet snow. Lows tonight will hold steady near 28 degrees. Winds will be
out of the north to northeast at 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday: Early morning snow showers will give way to partly sunny
skies. It will be a very nice day to get out and enjoy the beautiful
weather, with temperatures once again in the upper 30's. It will be
breezy tomorrow, with winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 mph.

Saturday Night: A clear start and then increasing clouds towards day
break, as a weak system makes it into our area. Lows will be in the
teens. Winds will be light out of the west.

Sunday: The cloudy skies return back to the Northeast Kingdom with
scattered snow showers. No accumulation is expected. Highs will be in
the upper 30's with a southwest wind of 10 to 15 mph.

                             Extended Forecast

Monday: A perfect day to skip work or school to get enjoy the nice
weather, especially if you are a skier. Partly sunny skies and warmer
temperatures with highs around 40 degrees. Lows will be in the upper
   teens.

Tuesday: Back to the cloudy skies again with a chance of light snow or
rain in the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 30's and lows will
   be 25 to 30 degrees.

Wednesday: Once again we will have another gray day with partly to
mostly cloudy skies. Highs will be around 40's. Lows will be in the
   20's.

                            Forecast Discussion

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY TONIGHT. This is one of the latest snowstorms
to impact the New England region. Most of the heavier snow has and
will continue to occur to our south. Snowfall amounts will be reduced
in the Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury area, because of the shadow
affect. The shadow affect is when the White Mountains in New Hampshire
squeezes all of the moisture out of the air as it rises up and over
the mountain tops leave no moisture for the other side of the White
Mountains. We witness this last Sunday night and it is going to be a
factor with this storm too! For snowfall amounts the Lyndonville and
St. Johnsbury area can expect 2 to 4 inches and elsewhere there will
be 4 to 7 inches. So if you are traveling tonight, take an easy. The
roads should be fine by late morning. Have a good night.
