Thank you to those who quickly offered helpful hints to solve our booting
problems with Real32.
We have found the solution for the machines we have (Dell OptiPlex GX115 and
IBM PC300GL), and
post these notes hoping they may help others who may also be installing
their software on newer computers.
Reformatting PC hard drives to support Windows 2000 and REAL/32 with dual
November 21, 2001.
In order to be able to boot with either Windows 2000 or REAL/32, the hard
disk must be partitioned as C: and D: drives. REAL/32 must reside on the C:
drive, partitioned no larger than 2 GB. Windows 2000 can reside on the
D:\drive, which can take up the remainder of the hard disk space. Thus,
large hard disks can be used.
The C: drive must be formatted as FAT16, whereas the D: drive must be
formatted as NTFS (Windows NT file format).
Windows 2000 must be installed prior to REAL/32, otherwise the system will
only boot to REAL/32.
The following steps have proven to work on Dell OptiPlex GX115 and IBM
1- Insert a Windows setup disk in the floppy drive and restart
2- Format the C:\drive by typing "FORMAT C:" at the A:> prompt.
3- Restart the computer, and launch the FDISK program.
4- Delete the existing C: partition, and create a new C:
partition as a 2 GB Primary DOS partition, and a D: partition as an Extended
DOS partition with the remainder of the hard disk space. DO NOT FORMAT THE
NEW PARTITIONS USING THE WINDOWS SETUP DISK.
5- Insert the 1st of the 4 Windows 2000 boot floppy disks, and
restart the computer.
6- When prompted, format the C: drive in FAT format, and the D:
drive in NTFS format.
7- Follow Windows 2000 setup instructions as displayed on the
8- Once the Windows 2000 installation is completed, insert the
REAL/32 Installation floppy disk and restart the computer.
9- Press F3 if loading of REAL/32 stops at the message "Loading
Real32". This disengages upper memory functionality.
10- Proceed with the installation of REAL/32.
If REAL/32 will not install on the C: Primary DOS partition, the
partition can be re-created using the FDSIK utility provided with the
REAL/32 installation software. Create the new C: primary DOS partition on
the hard disk cylinders recommended by the FDISK software. If the software
assigns cylinder 0 as the partition's starting cylinder, press ENTER instead
of inputting 0 as the value of the starting cylinder.
When starting the IBM PC300GL in the REAL/32 operating system, press F3 if
loading is halted after the message "Loading Real32" has been displayed.
(My thanks to Reg Theriault whose perseverance got us up and running and is
largely responsible for the notes above).
