Tim Leach, a 1999 geology graduate of Bates College, completed a
fact-gathering expedition in Alaska this summer to study the issues
surrounding the proposed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge (ANWR). During his fieldwork he was able to record interviews from
area citizens, indigenous peoples and scientists on both the proposed
drilling and wilderness designation for ANWR and the possible explicit and
latent ramifications of commercial activity in the area.  In light of the
current debate on oil exploration in ANWR, Mr. Leach is utilizing his
experience on the North Slope to bring greater attention and stimulate
wider public discussion of the several perspectives on permitting drilling
in the area.
