We in CIT have been receiving a barrage of reports from users of HP
JetDirect network printers over the past 1-2 weeks. The cause of this
issues is a bit of a mystery. Here is the story so far:
Problem:
JetDirect attached printer or printer with internal JetDirect EIO card
refuses to accept print jobs.
Printers often report "EIO Errors".
Many "diagnostics pages" full of nonsense characters or hexidecimal
debugging information are printed constantly.
Cause:
Unknown at this time. We have ruled out the Pandora/Calypso server
upgrades as the culprit as many printers can still connect to these
servers, and network printers that are NOT connected to NetWare print
queues also are having problems.
Solution:
We are still working on it. In the meantime LEAVE YOUR PRINTER ON! If you
turn the printer off we cannot locate it on the network and thus cannot
diagnose the problem! If the printer continues to print garbage pages,
simply empty your printer tray or put your printer on hold.
Report your malfunctioning printer to the
helpline. (mailto:[log in to unmask], or call x62604)
Have the following information available (if you can get it):
Your name, contact phone number, and department, and location of printer,
The name of the printer/print queue you are attempting to connect to,
The IP address of the printer (available on the printer diagnostics page)
Other information that may be useful (also on diagnostics page): Firmware
revision number, hardware address, JetDirect model name. Providing us with
the most information you can get will be a great help in resolving these
issues.

The problem may be specific to older JetDirect models and/or older firmware
revisions.
