VARIED THRUSH

The Sutton VARIED THRUSH continued to be seen this week. Excellent
photos have been forwarded to the web master at VINS, and the photos should
be up on their web site soon. To see this wonderful bird, call Lucy and Ron
Tremblay at 802-467-3069 to arrange a visit.
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, one of the earliest harbingers of spring,
returned in numerous locations around the state this week, especially in the
Champlain Valley. There were lesser numbers of COMMON GRACKLES and
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS. Can spring be far behind? Some would justifiably
argue that we havenąt had much winter. TURKEY VULTURES have also made an
appearance with a maximum of 9 over Wilder near White River Junction on the
27th. There was a report of a KILLDEER on the 25th from 1500 feet elevation
along Geary Road in South Lincoln. A NORTHERN FLICKER, 75 ROBINS and 130
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were present along Exchange Street in Middlebury on the
25th. Another 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in an apple orchard in West
Cornwall on the 22nd, and 11 were spotted at the Windsor Prison on the 24th.
A remarkable 20 NORTHERN CARDINALS were counted at once in a backyard in
Shelburne on the 17th. A CAROLINA WREN was heard singing in Quechee.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was present near the intersection of Lake and
Orchard Roads in Charlotte on the 24th. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on the
26th along Brownąs Road in Lincoln.
BALD EAGLES continue to make a good showing along the lake. Fort Cassin
seems to be the best spot; 9 were counted there on the 23rd.
The only waterfowl report this week included 17 GADWALL and 3
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS along the west shore of Grand Isle on the 25th.
