Dorothy Todd of Warren just called me to report the three Sandhill Cranes
were "flying leisurely" southbound over Long Point in Ferrisburgh on
Sunday. She hadn't known they were around, so was glad to hear she wasn't
the only person who had noticed them.
Incidentally, in case anyone's interested in escaping (from the return of
winter) to Massachusetts, the birding's great down there. Highlights from
my weekend included Gyrfalcon (on the Boston Design Center building), and
on and around Plum Island: Western Grebe, Eurasian Wigeon, Barrow's
Goldeneye, Eurasian (Common) Teal, American Bittern, Iceland Gull, Lesser
Black-backed Gull, Short-eared Owl. Lots of Harlequin Ducks remain at Cape
Ann (Andrews Point). What fun!
The good news up here is that I'm told silver maple is now flowering in the
