Folks,
This message was sent to a friend of mine, who forwarded it to me. Please pass
it on, and please sign on to the petition.
Today's Jornada (the progressive daily here in Mexico) has a grotesque photo:

Not too likely to show up in the New Jerk Times, I suppose.

Subject: French mathematicians
Some French colleagues have come up with the idea, which
I had thought could not possibly work, of boycotting official Israeli
activities (conferences, exchange agreements) in order to protest
the current situation, while continuing to collaborate with, invite,
etc. Israeli mathematicians on an individual basis. This is all in
the context of a quite successful petition campaign, for details
of which I refer you to www.paixjusteauproche-orient.com (a number
of famous scientists have signed, along with film directors,
movie stars, musicians, comedians, elected officials, etc.)
The petition ("appel") has been translated into various
languages, including English, but there have been few signatures
outside France. I'm writing to ask your help in obtaining signatures
from academics in the U.S. (Any academic apparently qualifies
as a scientist.) If this petition can actually be used to convince
American academics not known to be activists to stay away from
Israel it would be great. But signatures from the "usual suspects"
(the MERIP list, etc.) are also welcome.
I'll be sending the same message to Jeanne (for transmission
to her network), to Bob Lange, and others who come to mind -- if
you can remind me they will come to mind sooner.
Michael
