Subject: Black Vulture in VT
Wayne , Pat,
Today i was checking out the Turkey Vulture roost across the river
from the West Lebanon landfill. At about 8:20, 32 Turkey Vultures were
spread along the low ridge immediately west of the CT River, stretching
their wings for a half hour before settling back down. At about 10:25, i
picked up 7 vultures lazily rising above the ridge; one was a Black
Vulture. They continued upward heading in a westerly direction; i
watched them until they disappeared. Of course the sad thing is i didn't
see the bird in NH.
I believe the Black Vulture is roosting with the Turkeys and will
remain in the area as long as the Turkeys do. The best spot to watch the
sky is from Rt.12A near Carroll's Concrete across from the landfill. A
panoramic view is available with the roost only about 1/4 mile to the
west. There is plenty of room to park on either side of the road in this
area. Take Exit 20 on I-89 east and head south on Rt.12A for about 3/4
mile; go thru town and up the hill , the entrance to the landfill is on
the right half way up the hill, but don't go into the landfill area.
I plan to be back there Saturday for another go at the Black Vulture
in NH.
Best---Denny
