- Birds of Special Note:
A Vermont Bird Tours outing to the Northeast Kingdom on May 31 and June
1 produced SPRUCE GROUSE, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, GRAY JAY and BOREAL
CHICKADEE, all in the Moose Bog area along Route 105 east of Island Pond. A
male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen out from the Brighton State Park beach at
the east end of Island Pond itself.
A little to the south in Corinth, 4 EASTERN TOWHEES plus 2 each PINE
WARBLERS, OLIVE-SIDED and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS were seen during a weekly
census there. In all, 12 species of warblers were seen out of a total of 69
species.
Highlights from the Shelburne area on June 1st included a drake NORTHERN
SHOVELER, and a GADWALL pair at the LaPlatte River marshes. A RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK was at Shelburne Pond.
Also on June 1st, a DUNLIN was at the Campbell Bay Campground in West
Swanton. A pair of VESPER SPARROWS and 5 singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were
at the Franklin County Airport. The latter are very easy to see and hear
without trekking out in the grass. Please observe them from the road.
At the South Slang of the Little Otter in Ferrisburgh the following were
seen or heard on the 2nd: 2 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 4 AMERICAN BITTERN, 4
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a pair of AMERICAN WIGEON, a female with young HOODED
MERGANSER, a pair of OSPREY on a platform nest, 2 calling SORA, a flock of
68 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 4 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS.
Three SNOW GEESE were at Dead Creek amidst several hundred CANADA GEESE
on the 2nd.
A dozen CATTLE EGRETS were in front of the barn at Shelburne Farms on
the 2nd.
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was reported perched on he telephone wires in the
neighborhood of łAffectionate Cats˛ between Shelburne and Charlotte.
An early morning excursion up Brigham Hill in Essex on the 1st yielded 9
species of warblers including BLACKPOLL, as well as a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.
A marsh monitoring of the Lake Bomoseen area produced among other
species, an adult and a juvenile BALD EAGLE. At adjacent Loves Pond, 13 male
WOOD DUCK were tallied.
A LEAST SANDPIPER was on the Ompompanoosuc flats north of Norwich on the
3rd.
