A male TENNESSEE WARBLER was heard singing at a beaver pond in
Plainfield on the 6th. This species is a very rare breeder in the state.
Chris Rimmer, head of research at VINS, posted a fascinating explanation of
│extralimital▓ breeding males on the VTBIRD listserv. To access this email

A MOURNING WARBLER continues to sing from just below the VYCC camp at
the top of Mt. Philo in Charlotte. Other warblers present include
YELLOW-RUMPED, CHESTNUT-SIDED, AMERICAN REDSTART, YELLOW, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, BLACK-AND-WHITE, and OVENBIRD.
Five MOURNING WARBLERS were counted on Ward Hill in Duxbury on the 7th.
It was also pointed out that a SCARLET TANAGER seen was the first of the
season. This compiler also noted what seemed to be a lack of this species
this year in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, and speculates
as to how much of an impact the cold, wet weather in May might have affected
Another MOURNING WARBLER was heard singing in Underhill Center and one
was located about 1 mile from Route 105 on the Lewis Pond Road east of
There was a report of BONAPARTE╣S GULLS from the trestle bridge in
Alburg on the 7th.
At Cranberry Pool at Missisquoi NWR, both AMERICAN and LEAST BITTERNS
were reported. Both OSPREY and BLACK TERNS were reported nesting.
A CASPIAN TERN was seen over the Colchester Causeway on the 10th.
At Dead Creek on the 7th, the following were highlights: 2 BALD EAGLES,
3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, and a BROWN THRASHER. A
RING-NECKED PHEASANT was spotted along West Street in Panton.
Apparently, the refuge manager at Dead Creek (Addison) has drawn down
the water levels at the Brilyea Access. In the past, this has attracted many
shorebirds during the southward migration that is well underway on the
coast! At the Little River Reservoir in Waterbury where water levels are
also low, 2 LEAST and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER were present on the 9th.
A BOBWHITE was seen and heard in Corinth this week.
A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was discovered nesting in Rutland Town.
