It's been a couple weeks since I last saw them, but this morning (25 July)
at 9am, there were 3 Great Egrets in the swamp on the right-hand side of
RT. 127 (The Beltline) going into downtown Burlington.
There is always a bunch of neat stuff (green and blue herons, night herons,
etc etc...) in this large swamp...but unfortunately no place to pull the
car over and have a good look. Instead, you have to do 50mph birding...one
eye on the road, one eye looking through the bins...LOL! There is a trail
leading down to the swamp. The access is on North Ave across from the high
school, and leads to an observation area that only looks out over a small
portion of the swamp (not where the Egrets are routinly seen). It looks
like you'd have to bushwack through god knows what to see more of the
swamp... Really, the best place to see birds on this swamp is from the
road...and I think it's illegal to walk or bike on it...
