I would say that the Cercyonis pegala specimens illustrated are as follows:
The darker one is ssp. nephele (Northern Wood Nymph), in its fullness.
The somewhat larger one is typical of a specimen found near the upper limit
of the blend zone between ssp. maritima and nephele, but more fully nephele.
The remnants of the yellow/orange FW patch are a reddish shading and the
orange rings around the eyespots. The orange rings are what's left of the
orange patch of maritima. I have found similar specimens in central Maine,
around Streaked Mountain, near Buckfield, Oxford Co. This is typical of the
upper Transition/lower Canadian Zone areas of northern new England.
