Dear Colleagues, The Internet2 Member Meeting (October 27-30 in Los Angeles) will highlight many uses of digital video. Because there are so many exciting demos, track sessions, and other events, we thought we'd highlight some of the many related to digital video. Please feel free to share this email with other Internet2 members. ******************************************************** Digital Video Track Sessions Sessions of interest include: - Challenging Five Common Assumptions about Videoconferencing; - Internet2 Commons Overview; - Digital Asset Management; - Best Practices for Advanced Applications in Digital Video; - Video Across the Atlantic; - VidMid Videoconferencing Deliverables; - and the Latest Technologies in High Quality Video Distribution. Find a complete program here: • http://www.internet2.edu/activities/php/agenda.php?session_event_id=122 ******************************************************** Digital Film Festival Internet2's prototype Digital Film Festival will highlight short documentary works by students and showcase the ability to deliver digital film and interactive critiques over Internet2. On October 30, a judging panel of award-winning filmmakers will announce two winners from the eleven finalists and will critique the winning films with the student filmmakers via videoconference. • http://apps.internet2.edu/html/digitalfilmfestival.html ******************************************************** Cultivating Communities: Dance in the Digital Age This event will feature live performances by both onstage and remote musicians and dancers. The technologies used in the performances will include uncompressed video and audio, interactive 3-D animation, and a rare 10.2 Immersive Audio experience presented by USC's Academy Award winning Integrated Media Systems Center. This event will highlight the capabilities of Internet2-enabled collaborations and the talents of technologists and performers from our member institutions. • http://apps.internet2.edu/html/fall2002-perfevent.html ********************************************************   Digital Video Demos Taking advantage of our proximity to the entertainment industry, many of this year's demos will showcase cutting-edge technologies for video and audio streaming. - At the Davidson Executive Conference Center, Motorola Labs will highlight streaming multimedia over handheld devices with Access Grid nodes. inSORS will demo their commercial Grid product. - The National Marine Sanctuaries will stream live MPEG-2 video from three underwater cameras, coast to coast, using VBrick codecs. - RADVISION will demo their viaIP MCU and gateway with a multipoint videoconference using both H.323 and SIP-based endpoints. - VRVS will provide gateway functionality between Access Grid nodes and desktops and between Access Grid nodes and H.323 systems. - Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) will demonstrate how consumer equipment can be used for sending and receiving digital video streams using IPv4 or IPv6. - At the Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts, the ResearchChannel Consortium and University of Washington will demo options for extremely-high quality video and audio distribution over Internet2, including HDTV over IP, Video-on-Demand (including MPEG-2), multicast MPEG-2, and uncompressed stereo audio over IP. - NTT Network Innovation Labs will use a large-venue LCD projector to display a super high-definition digital video stream originating from their lab in Chicago. - At the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), an "immersipresence" application called Remote Media Immersion (RMI) will use sustained data rates of up to 60 Mbps over shared networks. Meeting attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art facilities at the Zemeckis Center and at IMSC. • http://apps.internet2.edu/html/fall2002-demos.html ******************************************************** Digital Video Meetings In conjunction with the member meeting, the Digital Video Initiative will host its annual meeting, a ViDeNet BOF will be held, the VidMid working group will meet, and Commons Site Coordinators are invited to meet one another at a luncheon. • http://www.internet2.edu/activities/php/agenda- Fall02.php?session_event_id=122 ******************************************************** Commons Site Coordinator Training Site Coordinator training for the Internet2 Commons videoconferencing service will be held immediately following the Member Meeting, October 30-31.
