Randy,
At Montpelier, we have ca. 250 PCs and 200 Macs. We have one Mac techie and one PC techie and me. I'm in charge of the network itself and am the primary support person for PCs outside the high school (where most of our PCs are) and I also support the district phone system. But we all work together. I've even been known to open a Mac up occasionally (though I have no idea what to do once I get them opened).
I'm always interested to get these support-ratio figures, but they need to be put in context. There is much else that impacts the burden on tech support people. For instance:
What other tasks, beyond tech support, are these people expected to do? (Teaching, Website development and/or maintenance, telephones.)
What is the average age of the equipment they support?
Are major technical responsibilities out-sourced? (e.g.: email, basic network administration)
Are consultants brought in frequently?
What level of repairs are actually done in-house?
What is the users' expectation for response-time? (5 min.? 5 hours? 5 days?)
Is the network fairly static or being changed and expanded constantly?
Do techies work overtime? (Uncompensated overtime most likely.)
I'm sure you can all add to that list.
And each of us slices his or her job differently it seems which makes comparison even more difficult.
But, still, as I said, I'm always interested in the numbers so if people respond to you directly Randy, would you forward them to the list?
Thanks.
Vince

Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to get a sense of what the average computer to technician
ratio is in Vermont schools. I'm beginning my budget planning process
and feel this might help (or hurt) my yearly plea for more help.. I
also think this in info we can all use. Here in Chittenden Central, we
have a 295:1 computer to technician ratio. I know many of us wear many
hats, but how many people or hours are spent servicing machines?
Thanks,
Randall Short
