At the South Burlington H.S. Pizza conference this spring, Fred
mentioned system policies as a way of securing PCs on a network from
unwanted changes by students and indicated that he had prepared a
presentation on this at a previous year’s conference. I’ve been meaning
to follow up on this since that conference, but you know how things can
go… I recalled this resource this fall when we recently made the
change from using Fortres to prevent changes to our windows setup on
individual systems to using Symantec Ghost to basically overwrite those
changes on a weekly (at least in theory) basis on all networked
machines. While I was happy to remove Fortres and all the problems that
it caused with some of our CD programs as well as programs like Adobe
Photoshop, apparently the freedom of the full start menu and all has
proven to be too much for some of our students. To be more specific, I
wish to prevent changes to screen savers, wallpaper and icons. It all
started out innocently enough, I thought a few kids were quite clever to
use marquee screen savers to advertise for class officers campaigns.
But, the few bad kids spoil it for everyone and this has now degenerated
into inappropriate wallpapers and “so and so is a *>*(!” marquees.
Fred, I’m hoping you’ll share your skill with this with the whole list.
Maybe the rest of you folks are more knowledgeable than myself, but I’m
guessing there are a few others out there who would find this
information quite useful. But feel free to reply to me directly if you
prefer. And anyone else with suggestions, I’d love to hear those as
Thanks in advance.
