JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Laboratory Manager will have direct responsibility for maintaining the Stable Isotope Laboratory (SIL), a component of the Environmental Research and Teaching Laboratory (ERTL) at the University of Kentucky. The ERTL facility will serve a broad community of earth scientists, biogeochemists, agronomists, environmental engineers, and anthropologists with highly diverse applications including both natural abundance and enrichment studies. The SIL is to be equipped with two IRMS instruments and several peripherals:
Finnigan DeltaXP (equipped with both dual-inlet and continuous flow)
Finnigan DeltaXP (equipped with continuous flow)
Costech ECS 4010 Elemental Analyzer
TC/EA
Finnigan GasBench II
10-port Multiport
Plans are underway to augment the ERTL-SIL to accommodate laser fluorination and organic compound-specific isotopic measurements. The lab manager will be responsible for overall laboratory management including: routine maintenance of instruments, design and oversight of quality control procedures, development of new analytical procedures, financial planning and budgeting, and supervision of all users of equipment in the facility. S/he will also participate in training for educational use of the equipment in the SIL. The lab manager is expected to become cross-trained on GC-MS, LC-MS, and general GC to provide minor support to other instrumentation in the ERTL facility. S/he will be coordinating with two other ERTL laboratory managers on a broad range of environmental analyses to support ERTL users. The lab manager will interact with all users of the facility, including faculty, staff and students, and will advise on analytical aspects of their studies. Salary will be determined based upon the applicant's qualifications, but the base will be $36K, with benefits.
REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE:
A candidate holding an MS or PhD degree in an appropriate scientific discipline (earth science, chemistry, biology, biogeochemistry, environmental sciences) is preferred. Requirements for the position include prior experience troubleshooting the technical issues associated with isotope ratio mass spectrometry. No previous experience with GC and LC instrumentation is required. The lab manager must also have proven management skills and the ability to interact well with people.
