Dear listmembers,
some of my colleages would like to jump into d18O analysis and heavy
discussions at our institute took place during the past weeks. The main
unsolved issues during these discussions I address below and I would be
greatful for any comments, references, and labs which are willing to
scientifically coorperate with us:
1. d18O measurements in water: How have samples to be taken, shipped, and
stored until measurement. As far as I know is storing in PE bottles not
appropriate due to CO2 exchange through PE walls with ambient air.
2. D18O measurement of diatoms extracted from soil and sediment: Do you
know of any reliable method to quantitatively separate diatoms from any
mineral soil and / or sediment material. Up to now we tried several
procedures described in the literature and checked the purity of extracted
diatoms with SEM/EDX. However, non of the methods so far was able to
quantitativly separate diatoms and minerals.
3. D18O measurement of diatoms: Once we will be able to successfully
extract diatoms from soil samples, how such material is analysed for its
18O composition and who is willing to collaborate with us in this issue?
Any comments are highy appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
Kindest regards
Bruno Glaser
