At our facility Gastrocnemius vein thrombosis is treated just like any
below the knee DEEP vein thrombosis. Since we have an anticoagulation
clinic these patients are registered with this clinic and the only
treatment they receive are follow up duplex exams to determine presence or
absence of propagation. The anticoagulation clinic does not medically treat
any below the knee thrombosis except in unusual medical circumstances.
After two or three follow up duplex exams that do not demonstrate
propagation the patient is released from care having been thoroughly
educated on the signs and symptoms of DVT and told not to hesistate to
return for a duplex exam upon any change in symptoms.
