There was a late report from October 27th of an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
at Herrickšs Cove in Rockingham.
Waterfowl migration continues with most reports from Lake Champlain.
Species reported this week include RED-THROATED and COMMON LOON,
PIED-BILLED, HORNED and RED-NECKED GREBE, CANADA and SNOW GOOSE, WOOD DUCK,
GADWALL, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, MALLARD, AMERICAN WIGEON, RING-NECKED DUCK,
GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, all three SCOTERS, LONG-TAILED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD,
COMMON GOLDENEYE, and all three species of MERGANSER. While scanning the
lake for migratory waterfowl, both EASTERN SCREECH-OWL and CAROLINA WREN
were found in Charlotte.
At least six species of shorebirds are still being found in various
locations. GREATER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, DUNLIN and COMMON SNIPE
were seen at Sandbar State Park on the 5th, and locations in Alburg and West
Swanton also yielded one or more of these species. At the Crown Point Bridge
on the 3rd, a late SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was mixed in with a small flock of
DUNLIN and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Also late were 5 SEMIPALMAATED
SANDPIPERS at Shelburne Town Beach on the 3rd. Two GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a
COMMON SNIPE were seen near the mouth of the Ompompanoosuc River in Norwich
on the 2nd.
In addition to the continuing SNOW GOOSE show at Dead Creek, at least
one late MARSH WREN was present on the 2nd at the Brilyea Access along with
a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 3 shorebird species including 6 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 15 DUNLIN. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were back
in small numbers with at least one dark phase bird.
Lingering migrants included an EASTERN PHOEBE in Tinmouth on the 2nd;
FOX, SONG, WHITE-THROATED and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS; a CHIPPING SPARROW and
a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER were seen on the 4th in Shaftsbury; another
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was reported in Dorset; AMERICAN PIPITS were still
present at Dead Creek, and one was seen in Norwich on the 7th; and a late
OSPREY was seen over Lake Champlain at Benson on the 4th.
