Activity at the goose viewing area along Route 17 in Addison has picked
up again. On the 9TH and 10th, a ROSSą GOOSE was seen among more than 5000
SNOW GEESE. On the 11th, at least 4000 SNOW GEESE passed by the Charlotte
shoreline, and there were at least 9000 at Dead Creek.
Also on the 11th at Potash Bay in Panton, the following were among the
species seen: 50 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 12 BLACK SCOTERS, 25 LONG-TAILED
DUCKS, 80 SCAUP (SP?), and 100 COMMON GOLDENEYES.
At Grand Isle, an adult LITTLE GULL, presumably the same bird, has been
seen off and on this past week. On the 12th, 86 COMMON LOONS, 2 RED-THROATED
LOONS, 1 RED-NECKED GREBE, 1 HORNED GREBE, 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS and a
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER passed by the west shore.
Shorebirds this week in several locations between Sand Bar and Alburg
include GREATER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.
A probable RED-THROATED LOON was seen on lake Morey in Fairlee on the
13th. Present on the 15th were 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a female GREATER SCAUP,
2 COMMON GOLDENEYES and 6 female BUFFLEHEADS.
At the manure piles near the mouth of the Ompompanoosuc River in
Norwich, one each KILLDEER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, and COMMON SNIPE
were present on the 11th.
At Minards Pond in Brattleboro on the 10th, at least 900 CANADA GEESE, a
SNOW GOOSE, 16 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 75 HOODED MERGANSERS and 25 COMMON
MERGANSERS were found.
A farm pond in East Dorset yielded the following: AMERICAN WIGEON,
NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL plus several CANADA GEESE.
