There are still a number of shorebirds moving through the valley in
various locations from Bridport to Dead Creek and up in Swanton, Alburg and
Sand Bar State Park in Milton. Nine species including BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
SEMIPLMATED SANDPIPER, KILLDEER, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, DUNLIN and COMMON SNIPE were all found this
week. It is best to look in flooded fields, around farm ponds or along
beaches as at Sand Bar and St. Albans Bay.
Two DUNLIN were found in the puddles across Route 132 from the
Ompompanoosuc Flats in Norwich on the 27th.
Last week at Charlotte Town Beach, there was a big push of SCOTERS on
the 21st including 34 SURF, and 1086 WHITE-WINGS. 353 WHITE-WINGS, 71
LONG-TAILED DUCKS and 41 COMMON and RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS moved past on
the 28th. 35 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were tallied there on the on the 29th. Both
BUFFLEHEAD and COMMON GOLDENEYES were also reported from along the lake.
RED-THROATED LOONS were seen off Ferrisburgh and Charlotte this week. A
single BRANT were found off Alburg on the 28th.
At Berlin Pond, 28 BLACK SCOTERS, and a LESSER SCAUP were seen, and a
surprising VIRGINIA RAIL was heard but not seen on the 29th.
Lake Morey in Fairlee produced a RUDDY DUCK and LESSER SCAUP on the 27th;
a LESSER SCAUP, 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 COMMON GOLDENEYE, plus 8 HOODED and 3
COMMON MERGANSERS and a mixture of MALLARDS and BLACKS were present on the
31st.
SNOW GEESE continue in number at Dead Creek in Addison. A ROSS¹ GOOSE
and a probable RICHARDSON¹S CANADA GOOSE were seen there on the 27th. Also
present were 10 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 28 DUNLIN, 1 PECTORAL and 1 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen as well.
Eight species of SPARROW were seen in Grand Isle on the 29th including
12 AMERICAN TREE, 1 CHIPPING, 1 FIELD, 1 SONG, 2 WHITE-THROATS, 2
WHITE-CROWNS, 38 JUNCOS and 2 SAVANNAHS. The only reports of FOX SPARROW
were of a single bird in Shelburne and 14 at the Union Village Dam on the
31st.
Lingering HERMIT THRUSHES were seen in Norwich, at Delta Park and in
Dorset.
