Here is a Linux installation tip.
If you are setting up a linux box to be a file server, put /home either
in its own partition or on a separate drive. If the OS becomes corrupted
for some reason and you need to reinstall (Linux is pretty stable and I
haven't been forced into reinstalling), you can safely remove all of the
files from / (/=root) and have all of the data in the home directories
remain intact. Make sure you keep a backup of your shadow, passwd, and
group files at a minimum. Ideally keep a current backup of /etc.
If you are setting up a web server you can use the same logic but put
/var in its own partition or on its own drive.
