Ah, Another hasty generalization. I've had two newtons;
one died, the other is still active.
Newton handwriting recognition was indeed the butt of
a lot of jokes, mostly by people who thought (1) that
you had to PRINT rather than WRITE (the Newton recognized
"script") and (2) that everyone types better than they
write.
The Newton did a decent job at recognizing handwriting;
if you get a key stroke counting program and analyze
what actually happens on a keyboard, you'll find that
both the Newton, the Palm Pilot, ViaVoice, etc all
have comparable "error rates". It's just that we've
become aclimated to the magic of the backspace key.
Right now, I'm a heavy Palm Pilot user - good recognition,
good storage, good battery life, and much more portable
than the newton.
