RE: Commemoration Service for The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.
I encourage each of you to join me at the University's Commemoration Service
in remembrance of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wednesday, Jan.
15, at 4 p.m. in Ira Allen Chapel. As we begin a new year and a new
semester, this is an ideal time to honor Dr. King's legacy of peace, justice
and concern for all individuals, on this the 35th anniversary of his
assassination.
The Commemoration Service will include keynote remarks by Professor Emeritus
H. Lawrence McCrorey, former dean of the School of Allied Health; comments
from students who recently made a pilgrimage to Selma, Ala.; and a musical
tribute to Dr. King by the Catamount Singers, directed by David Neiweem,
chair and professor of music. At the conclusion of the service, participants
will be invited to light a candle as a symbol of their commitment to carry
forward Dr. King's light and vision.
I hope all of you will not only participate in the service for Dr. King, but
also rededicate yourselves to making the University of Vermont a community
that reveres equality, justice and respect for all its members.
