UVM Men's Lacrosse Set To Open 2003 Season at Brown Saturday

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont men's lacrosse team will open
up the 2003 season Saturday with a non-league game at Ivy League power
Brown in Providence, R.I. Game time is set for 2:00pm.

Vermont is coming off a 5-9 season, 1-4 in the conference, but the
Catamounts will be a force to be reckoned with this season. Coach Steve
Beville returns the top seven scorers from last season, including junior
attackman Phil McKnight (Baltimore, Md.), who was a second-team
All-Conference selection in 2002 after scoring a team-high 32 goals. Also
returning is goalkeeper Michael Gabel (Falmouth, Mass.), who had a solid
freshman year between the pipes for Vermont in 2002.

"We hope to build on the experience that the younger players got last
year," Beville said. "Brown is traditionally a top-15 team that almost won
the Ivy League title last year. They return a number of outstanding
players, had an excellent recruiting year and have a great coaching staff.

"This will be a great opportunity to test ourselves against a national
power," he added.

In addition to a roster loaded with experienced upperclassmen, the
Catamounts also boast of a number of outstanding freshmen, including
midfielder Austin Humphries (Salem, Va.), defenseman Brent Wilson
(Canandaigua, N.Y.) and attackman Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.). In
addition, sophomore standout Chris Legare (Pinkerton, N.H.), who missed the
2002 season with an injury, returns to help bolster an already powerful
offense.

Captains for the 2003 team are Garnet Smith (Sudbury, Mass.), McKnight,
Kevin McElwee (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Doug Moses (Marietta, N.Y.). Moses has
made a smooth transition to midfield, which bolsters that unit for Coach
Beville.

Vermont opens at home on Tuesday, March 25th against Siena. The Catamounts
were picked to finish fourth in the America East pre-season coaches' poll
last week.
