Two drake and possibly two hen BARROWıS GOLDENEYES were seen along with
BUFFLEHEADS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, and SCAUP on the 19th in a small area of
open water around the two ferries docked in Charlotte. The males were still
present on the 22nd. Also present on the 22nd were 2 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 6
MALLARDS, 3 LESSER SCAUP, and 1 COMMON GOLDENEYE. On the 21st, the same open
water was host to 2 MUTE SWANS, 2 MALLARDS, 2 BLACKS, 24 COMMON GOLDENEYES,
3 HOODED MERGANSERS, and 4 COMMON MERGANSERS.
An unusual duck in front of the Coast Guard Station in Burlington on the
19th was identified as a MALLARD-WOOD DUCK hybrid. A PEREGRINE FALCON and an
immature COOPERıS HAWK were also seen in the vicinity.
Along the Winooski River below the dam in Essex, 112 MALLARDS, 37 BLACK
DUCKS, 6 COMMON and 2 HOODED MERGANSERS were tallied on the 15th.
Two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were at the Grand Isle Ferry Docks on the
19th and 20th. Three NORTHERN PINTAILS were at the Fish Hatchery on also on
the 20th.
BALD EAGLES were reported from the Charlotte Ferry Docks, downtown
Burlington, Wilder and at Vernon Dam.
A COOPERıS HAWK posed for several minutes in East Dorset, and another
was raiding a feeder in Newfane.
GRAY JAYS have begun to build nests in Victory Bog (A first for the
new Atlas?). BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, PURPLE FINCHES, EVENING GROSBEAKS,
PINE SISKINS, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were all present recently.
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS visited feeders in Charlotte and Guilford.
At the La Platte River Marshes, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was present on the 17th.
An astonishing 30 eastern bluebirds were reported on the wires along
South Bingham Road in Cornwall. Another 8 have been visiting a feeder in
Shelburne.
CAROLINA WRENS seem to be surviving the winter well; birds were reported
from Grand Isle, Poultney, north Pownal, and West Brattleboro.
A dead female RED CROSSBILL was picked up at the junction of Prindle and
Bean Roads in Charlotte on the 20th.
On the 19th, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found at Dead Creek in the company
of about 50 SNOW BUNTINGS.
A COMMON GRACKLE and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS continue to visit a feeder
in Monkton. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was in South Burlington, and a NORTHERN
FLICKER was at an undisclosed location in the mid-Champlain Valley.
