This "news" is a little out of date--nine days short of a year out of
date to be precise--but of possible interest after Rodney Olsen's recent
report of a Red-bellied Woodpecker in Charlotte.
I saw one in the black locust at the corner of Whalley and Lake Roads
last winter on 2/24/02, just across the road from his sighting. It was
there just a short time before Maeve Kim saw one between Lake Road and
Ferry Road, likely the same bird--or, even more interestingly, a
potential mate.
This appears to be a good place to look for confirmation of nesting.
Although this area doesn't get as much traffic as Dead Creek, there is a
high birder population in the vicinity.
