I live in Fairfax and have been counting feeder birds every weekend for
FeederWatch. I've had 9 species this winter that I see almost every count:
Mourning Dove (low count of 2, high of 40, typically 15-25)
Downy Woodpecker (1)
Hairy Woodpecker (1)
Blue Jay (5 to 22)
Black-capped Chickadee (2 to 5)
White-breasted Nuthatch (1 to 2)
American Tree Sparrow (1 to 13, typically 6-8)
Dark-eyed Junco (1 to 17, typically 6-8)
American Goldfinch (2 to 30, typically 8-10)
Other species that have made only occasional appearances this year are:
Tufted Titmouse (2 in November; a regular in past years)
American Robin (2 on 2/08)
Northern Cardinal (1 through the end of Dec.; none since, but a regular in past
years)
House Finch (5 to 25, but on only 4 weekends)
That's about it. Goldfinch numbers are down this year, and there have been no
Purple Finches. And of course no Redpolls this year (my favorites!)
