Since I put my original request on MEDLIB-L I have learned more than I
wanted to know about this topic. However, I wanted to let you all know
that our legal counsel has rejected the use of a standardized published
source for the hospital's list, since the sources contain multiple meanings
for many abbreviations and do not keep up with the abbreviations not to be
used because of patient safety. JCAHO apparently wants one meaning per
abbreviation and it is important to ensure that potentially unsafe
abbreviations are not used in the medical record. Lois Ann Colaianni,
Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, Whittier CA. [log in to unmask]
