First question: what do the machines have for processors and ram?
If they aren't at least 450mhz CPUs (MS says it will run on 133s. Hah! It might crawl, but it won't run.) with 64 mb of RAM (128 is much nicer), and a 2gb hard drive with at least a third of it free, I'd leave them at NT4.
If they've got they meet the above minimums, you should be able to just run upgrades that would, in most cases, keep the stuff they have the way they have it. At least that was our experience. All of our NT software ran fine (often better) on Windows 2K. That may not be true for them if they have some odd-ball apps though. I think, however, if they don't upgrade, they may find themselves unable to run some newer software that will work on Win2K or XP, but not on NT.
I found Windows 2000 to be more stable than NT4 and much easier to use. Just the "plug-and-play" functionality was worth the upgrade. On the other hand, we have two computer labs running NT4 and we have very little trouble. Please note though, if the library stays with NT, you might still want to help them be sure they have the latest service pack installed (6a, I think).

Looking for some input: I've been asked by our local library to upgrade
their Gate's Foundation computers from WinNT to Win2k (keep in mind I'm a
Mac Guy!). They've been given all of the software, directions, and tech
support to do the upgrade. In the process they will lose many of the
originally configured applications that kids use daily, because the full
upgrade re-configures the drive and all settings (groups, priveleges,
etc). Currently nothing is wrong with their small network of 2 Gate's
computers, printer, and 3rd Win95 machine, but they are being "strongly
encouraged" to upgrade by VT Dept of Libraries and Gates. What would you
do? Is there a way to custom upgrade and salvage the older applications
-Gates doesn't tech support this- (will they work with win2k?)? Any input
is helpful, thanks!
