Amit has been politically active for a long time. His textbook
"Modeling Brain Function" published by Cambridge Univ Press in 1989
says in the "About the Author" section of the back cover:

  "For many years he has been the chairman of the Committee for
  Solidarity with BirZeit UNiversity in the West Bank"

its unusual for a science book to have that kind of comment in the bio
section, i gather Amit insisted on that himself.
