I had the enjoyable (although slightly unnerving) experience Wednesday
afternoon of startling 3 TURKEY VULTURES who were feeding on some unseen
roadkill on the shoulder of Browns Trace Road between Richmond and Jericho.
They all took off at once when my car rounded a sharp bed and approached
them. I was going about 45 mph, and birds that size don't exactly go 0-60 in
3 seconds, so I was afraid for a moment we might have a collision, but
luckily they all flew off safely. We got a great look at them.
I then had the pleasure of teaching my 3 1/2 year old, who was in the back
seat and wide-eyed at the huge birds he'd just seen, all about vultures and
what they like to eat. With any luck, we'll be birding together in 10
years.
