The wintry interlude seemed to slow the pace of spring migration. A
BLUE-WINGED TEAL showed up at East Creek in Orwell on the 5th and a RUSTY
BLACKBIRD appeared in a field in Plainfield on the 6th. These were the only
two species that have not been reported previously this season. The moderate
temperatures forecast for the next few days should bring another wave of
migrants back.
A pair of SHORT-EARED OWLS was found in Orleans on the 9th. A NORTHERN
SHRIKE was also seen in the vicinity on the 10th. From I-91 northbound, take
Exit 26 and turn left onto Route 5. Go straight at the blinking light to the
center of town. Go left on Maple Street. After a couple of miles it becomes
River Road. Continue about a mile beyond the second railroad crossing and
look for the owls near a two story white house (on the right) with small,
ramshackle barn, mostly tin.
A BARROWšS GOLDENEYE (immature male) was spotted off the west shore of
Grand Isle on the 9th. Good numbers of 10 species of waterfowl were found
along the Connecticut River from Charlestown, NH south to Hinsdale, NH. The
tally included 428 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 13 GADWALL and 4 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS. An adult BALD EAGLE, 3 RED-NECKED GREBES and 4 BONAPARTEšS GULLS
were found just north of Brattleboro.
A flock of 34 SNOW GEESE flew over Weathersfield on the 6th.
Other sightings include a BALD EAGLE at Sandbar on the 5th, at least 5
around Chimney point in Addison on the 6th, and one over Cornwall on the
7th. A MEERLIN, possibly one of the nesting pair from Hanover, NH, was seen
in Norwich on the 5th. NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were seen on the 5th in Post Mills
and over Brigham Hill in Essex. COOPERšS HAWKS were seen over Weathersfield
on the 5th and Warren on the 8th. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was seen in Hinesburg
on the 5th. A WINTER WREN was reported from Huntington on the 5th. CHIPPING
SPARROWS were reported from Grand Isle on the 6th and in Shoreham on the
10th.
