Isodat 1.5 can run on Win2000 but only for data processing. Any attempt to control will not work. When Isodat NT was being developed NT4 was the better platform at the time for the most popular softwares (MS Office suite etc). If properly installed (key word..."properly") NT4 is very stable. We don't remember the last time we had to reboot and we run samples every day (EA, GC-C, PreCon). Our computer is also networked where we get the data from our office without disquettes and the computer is part of our lab server DOMAIN.
When the new operating systems came out (Win2000 and XP close behind) it was though that to jump over 2000 made more sense since the lifetime of operating systems (according to Microsoft) is 6 years. This means that support for patches and security are not supported for the operating system after that and Win2000 came out 1n 1999. Win XP being the latest it made more sense to go straight to that and bring the operating system close to the year 2010. IsodatNT 1.5 runs on WinXP quite happily.
The problem to run the instrument are that of the drivers for the GPIB or the fibre-optic line. National Instrument, the makers of the GPIB cards, have not released new drivers for WinXP and as far as I know will not do it either. IsodatNT has been running thousands of test samples on WinXP in the factory since before Xmass on the new instruments where the driver was installed manually (read programmed by hand). The drivers are the main part of the puzzle. Windows XP had so many bugs in it that many third party drivers would not run in a stable manner. These bugs are probably due to the fact that WinXP can run things all the way back to the mid-80s adding to the burden of compatibility. Since Service Pack 2 for XP this, finaly, has been improved 100 fold. We can now run third party products like USB-COM cables that can now go to COM-256 allowing the control of many peripherals (EA, GC, TOC-Analyser, autosamplers etc) from a single computer without cable swapping. We have also had a certain amount of success using a USB-GPIB adapter cable to run our older DetaPlus on IsodatNT 1.5 and WinXP. To my knowledge IsodatNT version 2.0 set to be released by summer-fall is 100% compatible with Windows NT 4.0 and Win XP.

We are running version 1.5 on Windows XP, however not coupled to the IRMS. We only use it for data processing. It might be that Win2000 or XP run into problems with the controller card. If you have a Delta XP or advantage it should work fine, because it comes with a newer board, so drivers for more recent OS should be available.
I would be grateful if you could tell me how you solved the problem, because or IT group plans to install XP even on terminals that are hooked up to our instruments...

Subject: [ISOGEOCHEM] question about operating systems for isodat
I was wondering if anybody has had any luck running isodat v1.5 on windows
2000? If so, what has been your experience, good and bad. Since this
question may not be of general interest, you can respond to me directly.
Thanks in advance.
