In MS Word, there is a feature 'Recover Text from Any File'.  Go to
File/Open.  Then under file types, you will see the above option.

Warning: after you select that as a open file type, it will become
the default, so the next time you open a real Word document, and
you didn't notice that you opened it in that mode, you will wonder
where all your formating went to.
