In an effort to help prevent the spread of future email viruses, we've
decided to start deleting certain types of attachments at the incoming
email gateway. This should help prevent the spread of viruses like this
morning's BugBear.B outbreak. The email will still come through, but the
attachment will be deleted if it is one of the below types.
The current file types that will be stripped at the mail gateway are:
.exe, .com, .scr, .bat, .vb, .vbe, .vbs, .pif, .lnk, and .ocx
Hopefully this will help reduce virus infections, and not significantly
hinder anyone's ability to email useful files around.
This currently only affects incoming email (email to addresses at UVM).
If you want to receive a file of the above type, the sender can rename the
file, zip the file, or use the UVM File Transfer web page, at
https://www.uvm.edu/filetransfer/
Thanks,
mga.
