VERMONT BREEDING BIRD ATLAS POSTING
In the field next to my house (not in a priority block) I have a
nest box that earlier in the season was occupied by Tree
Swallows. At least 3 weeks ago, I opened the box and found two
dead chicks that appeared to be at or near fledgling age. I have
no idea what killed them. I cleaned out all the nesting materials
(it didn't smell so great) and forgot about it. Several days ago
I noticed a bird fly out of the box. I checked inside and it was
filled right up to the entry hole with sticks and twigs -- very
different from the Tree Swallow's nest. I returned with
binoculars and eventually saw a House Wren enter the box. This
isn't a species that I have seen using this box in the past.
Anyway, it's not too late to return to nesting cavities to see if
someone new has moved in.
