Dory and I stopped at Brilyea this afternoon to see who was doing what;
We saw the night heron family (4 handsome speckled juveniles and an adult).
We then scoped the great egrets, GBH's, least sandpipers, dowitchers,
yellowlegs and pectorals at the drawn-down area (no artillery being fired,
for which we are thankful). A nice couple came up and asked us "what kind
of shorebird is big, and has a down-curved beak? It's right over there..."
Well naturally we hustled right over, and lo and behold, a whimbrel. Very
cooperative bird, waded around close to shore for half an hour, occasionally
giving its 7-whistle call.
