On October 12th, my wife and I heard, independently, the yellow-billed
cuckoo(s) that spent the summer at Braeloch Point in Colchester. We
haven't heard it since. Does anyone know the latest autumn record for
this bird in Vermont? References I've seen say it is gone by the end of
September. I have found a report by Ludlow Griscom, mentor to a teen-aged
Roger Tory Peterson, of a yellow-bill collected i.e., shot dead)on
November 7, 1890 in Wellfleet, Cape Cod, by a Mr. O. Bangs. Mr. Bangs has
descendants in Wellfleet today, and we hope the cuckoo does too.
