Waterfowl in Southern VT, 10/23

Spent the day birding in southern VT trying to cash in on yesterday's scoter
excitement.  Made 17 stops at 13 different ponds, lakes, and reservoirs
scattered across the southern towns.  Found surf and white-winged scoters, but
missed black (which unfortunately was my target).  Red-breasted merg was another
good find for inland VT.

Here are the numbers, first the totals then broken down by location -

-  DC Cormorant - 1

-  Black Ducks - 2
-  Green-winged Teal -  3
-  Wood Duck - 4
-  Ring-necked Duck - 11

-  Red-breasted Merganser - 3

Lake Shaftsbury - Shaftsbury
-  2 Mallards
-  150 Canada geese along US 7A in Shaftsbury

Lake Paran - Bennington
-  1 Double-crested cormorant
-  2 Pied-billed grebes
-  22 Canada geese
-  1  Green-w Teal
-  1 Ring-necked duck
-  1 Common goldeneye
-  5 Surf Scoters (4 male, 1 female)
-  1 White-winged scoter (male)
-  1 Osprey

Big Pond - Woodford
-  20 Mallards (all making dives under water!! - really had me going at
first)
-  2 Black ducks
-  1 Great blue heron

Searsburg Reservoir - Searsburg
Nothing

Somerset Reservoir - Somerset
-  Hermit thrushes - 4 (along the road)
No waterfowl

Harriman Reservoir - Wilmington and Whitingham
-  50 Canada geese
-  1 Merganser sp.
-  1 Water pipit
No waterfowl in 2 other stops

Sadawga Pond - Whitingham
-  4 Mallards
-  4 Wood ducks
-  6 Ring-necked ducks

Ryder Pond - Whitingham
-  3 Red-breasted mergansers

Clara Lake - Whitingham
No waterfowl

Lake Raponda - Wilmington
-  36 Canada geese
-  4 Ring-necked ducks
-  1 Bufflehead
-  9 Common mergs

Brattleboro Retreat - Brattleboro
-  1 Pied-billed grebe
-  13 Canada geese
